How scoring works
When one player empties their rack in Rummikub Classic, the other players total the tiles left in their own racks and record negative scores. The winner receives the combined total as a positive score. The scores for that game should add up to zero.
Number tiles count at face value. A joker remaining on a rack counts as 30. Tiles already on the table do not add to a player’s leftover total.
Example: one player goes out
Alex finishes first. Blair has a 7 and a 9, Casey has a joker and a 5, and Drew has an 8 and a 13. Colours do not affect the value of these leftover number tiles.
| Player | Tiles left / rack value | Game score |
|---|---|---|
| Alex | 0 | +72 |
| Blair | 7 + 9 = 16 | −16 |
| Casey | Joker + 5 = 35 | −35 |
| Drew | 8 + 13 = 21 | −21 |
Alex receives 16 + 35 + 21 = 72 points. The check is +72 − 16 − 35 − 21 = 0. Give the winner the combined penalties, not just the largest opponent’s total.
The joker’s two different values
A joker in an opening meld counts as the number it represents. A joker left on your rack at the end counts as 30. These values serve different purposes.
On the table: the joker represents 11
By contrast, Casey’s unplayed joker and 5 in the example above total 35 penalty points. For moving a joker during play, see the joker replacement guide.
What if nobody can finish?
An empty draw pool does not immediately end the game: players continue while legal plays remain. If nobody can play and nobody has emptied their rack, the cited Classic rules award the game to the player with the lowest remaining rack value.
For each other player, subtract the winner’s rack value from their own total and record that difference as a negative score. The winner receives the sum of those differences.
| Player | Rack value | Game score |
|---|---|---|
| Alex | 6 | +32 |
| Blair | 11 | −5 |
| Casey | 18 | −12 |
| Drew | 21 | −15 |
Blair’s difference is 11 − 6 = 5, Casey’s is 18 − 6 = 12, and Drew’s is 21 − 6 = 15. Alex scores +32; the other scores are −5, −12 and −15. Again, the total is zero.
This example assumes a single lowest rack. If players tie for the lowest value, check your edition or agree on a house rule; the cited booklet does not spell out that tied blocked-game case.
Track games won as well as points
The cited Classic booklet groups games into rounds: four games per round for four players, three for three, and two for two. Decide how many rounds to play before starting.
Its overall winner is the player who wins the most games; the highest points total breaks a tie. Keep a separate count of games won instead of assuming the highest score alone decides the session. Your set’s booklet or agreed house rules may use a different session format.
Quick scoring checks
- Count only tiles left on racks at the end of the game.
- Use 30 for a leftover joker, not its last imagined tile value.
- Record losers’ scores with minus signs and the winner’s with a plus sign.
- For a blocked game, use differences from the lowest rack rather than the normal empty-rack calculation.
- Check that each game’s scores sum to zero, then update games won.
